14 Ways to Spend Valentine’s Day in a Long-Distance Relationship
Around February everyone talks about how hard it is to be single on Valentine’s Day. I personally think it’s much harder to be in a long-distance relationship, and unfortunately, be unable to see each other for a special day of being in love.
If you are forced to be apart from your loved one this Valentine’s Day, here are 20 ideas to help the distance not seem so bad!
Candlelight Painting Night
Paint nights combine a romantic activity, and a perfect way to give a memorable gift in celebration of your love. All the supplies for a romantic paint night together can be purchased at your local craft store or dollar store. Click here to see some more details!
A paint night can also be a great way to surprise your loved one, by painting something significant to you both and surprising them with the reveal. I’ve even seen paint night proposals!
Make chocolate-covered strawberries
On Valentine’s Day, chocolate-covered strawberries are a luxurious classic, and a simple way to bring some romance to your video call.
With a quick grocery trip, you can stock up on some fresh strawberries, chocolate, whipped cream, and maybe some sparkling water to add a little extra sparkle to your evening. Making them together over a video call is a great way to feel connected, and you also get to enjoy a delicious treat together without needing to be professionals in the kitchen.
Play an online co-op game
Did you know that couples that play online games together have added opportunities to communicate together and build strong problem-solving bonds?
A few great games to try together are:
- Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
- It Takes Two
- Overcooked
- Portal 2
- A Way Out

Write them a love letter
Go on a video call, play some music, and pour your heart out on paper to your partner. Include some inside jokes, and maybe some secret things you love about them. Keep the contents a secret and send it in the mail. You’ll get to enjoy the time spent together with a romantic and cute date writing the letters, and then you’ll get to enjoy a second special memory when they come in the mail. Remember, that the thoughts behind a love letter go a long way!
Make a Valentine’s Day playlist
Music is the language of the soul- so tell your loved one how you feel about them with a collection of songs made especially for them. Using Spotify you can also collaborate on a playlist together to tell your love story together. If you want an extra romantic evening, you can also use a shared browsing session on Spotify to listen together.
Create a shared Pinterest board
Using Pinterest you can make a board to fill with ideas and plan out some of the beautiful moments you’ll have together once you’re reunited. I have a board that is filled with cute couple photos and date ideas, and I love sharing it with my partner. This is a fun way to look forward, and I think it brings you both together with a lot of joy shared towards the future.
Buy a small cake to enjoy on a video call
I think cakes make any day a special occasion, and they seem so romantic to share with a loved one. One beautiful LDR couple I know celebrates their anniversary every month and often decorates a beautiful cake to cut into during their video call celebration. If you are feeling extra ambitious, maybe you could try making your own cakes together over a video call.
Send each other chocolates from your region
In Canada, you can find special brands of chocolate that aren’t available in the United States. For one special Valentine’s Day surprise, I sent my partner a box filled with Canadian chocolates, maple candy, and special “All-Dressed” chips that aren’t available in America. This is a great way to help your partner experience a little bit of your culture and your favorite sweet treats.
Make Jello Shots on a video call
For those who are more of party animals in love, then this might be your style of Valentine’s Day! Jell-O is easy to make and easy to enjoy. Make this in the morning or the night before to make sure that they will set for you to enjoy together and get a little tipsy together.
Play Truth or Dare together
Have you ever had something you wanted to ask your partner but didn’t have the guts to? This is a classic game that brings out a lot of love, mischievousness, and also builds connections and memories! Try this game this Valentine’s Day: I dare you!
Order take out together
This is a great way to enjoy Valentine’s Day dinner experience while still being able to video call and enjoy conversation and love on a special day. To feel a little bit more connected, you could try ordering the same meal, or a meal from the same restaurant if that is available to you. If a dinner won’t work for your time difference, you could order in some dessert or a special treat for take-out.
Watch a movie together
A movie can be a very romantic way to spend time together on Valentine’s Day as a long-distance couple. Whether you watch something funny or romantic, adventurous or nostalgic, make it something you will both remember. Adding some popcorn and some Valentine’s Day chocolate adds a little bit of extra spice to an evening. Heart-Shaped Pizza
On Valentine’s Day, you have the perfect excuse to make everything heart-shaped. A pizza in the shape of a heart is a simple way to bring a little love and festive spirit to your Valentine’s Day. Papa John’s and Pizza Hut both have heart-shaped pizzas available for Valentine’s Day, but you could also make your own hand-crafted pizzas to give them a personal touch.
Send each other corny Valentine’s Day memes
Puns, inside jokes, and fandoms are all fair game on Valentine’s Day. to personalize the memes a little bit you could use your own photos and an online program like Canva or Kapwing to make your own memes. Whether you make the memes yourself or find them on an account online be sure to send a little love to your LDR partner on Valentine’s Day.
