The Best Netflix Games to Spice up your Movie Night

Are you ready for your next Netflix Night? Picture this; it’s the end of the week, and you’ve just started a video call with your long-distance partner. It’s been a long week and you’re both looking to relax, have fun together, and spend quality time connecting.

What is your go to online date? Netflix night dates and watching a movie together tend to be the default for an evening and can often become just part of the routine. Although movies and tv series binges are a staple in any good long distance relationship, we hear from a lot of couples that they feel it can get a little bland. How can you mix it up? Here are a few ways that you can escape the rut and make your Netflix dates a full evening of fun.

Bad Movie Night

What’s better than finding a really good movie to watch on Netflix? Finding a really BAD movie to watch.

Trust me- It may sound backwards but it will give you inside jokes for MONTHS and will definitely create a memory you won’t forget.

Bad movie night is a blast because you are given the freedom to let loose and make fun of the characters, plot, costumes, and the insanely cheesy lines that will make you gag.

Here are a few of our favorite “So-bad-they’re-good” movies to cringe and laugh at:

  • The Room: This Cult Classic has all the makings of the perfect bad movie. This movie has become so legendary that there’s even been a movie made about the making of this insane movie (The Disaster Artist). The acting is outrageous, the scenes and settings are unbelieveable, and the plot itself will keep you continually saying in shock.
  • Sharknado: A movie about a tornado… filled with sharks…. Need we say more?
  • Batman & Robin: Holy hot sauce Batman! This movie is all sorts of cheesy and it has aged beautifully- I highly recommend giving this a shot
  • Spiderman 3: This era of spiderman was truly a dark age- we recommend having a good laugh at that one street scene. You know the one.
  • Cats: I have heard nothing but shock & horror in review of this movie; give it a watch and see for yourself!

Play a Drinking Game

If you haven’t played a drinking game with your favorite TV show for Netflix night, then you’re missing out! These games are great to play with a partner but also are awesome ways to do a group Netflix binge and all have fun while you’re apart. (Long distance friendships rejoice!)

I’ve searched around for the best drinking games for some popular series on Netflix: Click here to see our curated Pinterest board with some ideas!

Beware! Some of these are pretty brutal: so please play with caution and never drink more than you feel comfortable or safe.

Bet on the Ending

Not everyone likes to guess the ending, but it can be a fun way to change your expectations and put some stakes into the outcome of the story. Try choosing a super edgy sci-fi flick, or a mind-bending thriller for some good results. We bet on the ending of Squid Game together recently!

You could always add an extra layer and bet on multiple points of the movie:

  • Which character says a cliche line like “Guys, I’ve got a bad feeling about this.” or “Looks like we’ve got company!”
  • Which character will die first? Who will survive longest?
  • Who will end up together and who will break up?
  • What will the twist be?

You can bet money, something embarrassing like a dare, or maybe the loser pays for dinner next. Of course- The winner always gets bragging rights. 😉

“What’s on the Screen” Game

The rules are simple and easy to play, and I love the idea of this game. This game can easily become a drinking game if you decide to take a drink instead of getting a point.

Step 1. Put a hat on the corner of your screen, or tape a mustache/bowtie to the screen.

Step 2. Get a point every time a character lines up and looks like they are “wearing” the hat or bowtie or mustache.

This is a goofy game and super chaotic if you add in more rules. Make it your own and play it to your favorite movie or tv show for extra sparkle.

Change your setting or your screen

Want something that will help you count down to movie night? Try simply changing what you’re going to watch your movie on.

You can order mini projectors on Amazon for less than you’d think, and projecting a movie onto the ceiling, a wall, or a screen outside can take your movie night from bland to envy-worthy.

Here.fm is also a great option to watch a show together but mix up your settings. Learn more about here.fm by clicking here.

Theme Night

Are you both a little extra? Want to have a great night that you’ll remember for a long time?

Two words: THEME NIGHT.

We’ve had some great theme nights and they’re such a blast! You can do a theme night with a group of friends or make it a romantic date night.

Theme nights don’t have to be hard either: Just follow this simple formula for success.

Themed meal (+ optional themed drink) + themed activity and/or themed outfit + themed movie = The perfect theme night

Here are a few examples:

  • Hawaiian Pizza + Ukelele music to set the mood + Flower Leis + Beachy cocktails + Lilo & Stitch = Hawaiian Themed Night
  • Pita & Tzatziki Greek Salad & Kabobs + My Big Fat Greek Wedding / Mamma Mia = Greek Themed Night
  • Nachos + Taco night + Margaritas + Churros + Disney’s Coco = Mexican Themed Night

Interactive Netflix Night Movies

If you loved “Choose your Own Adventure” books as a kid, then doing an interactive movie night together is right up your alley. Netflix has been introducing a new kind of viewing experience, and it’s a great way to give you and your partner something to talk about. One of the best examples is “Bandersnatch” which follows the Black Mirror series.

It’s super meta and a little dark but very interesting. I love watching new people play it and see what they choose on their first run-through.

To have a collaborative experience, share screen and make your decisions on your paths together. You could also challenge each other to see who can get the best ending.

Dress-Up Night

A couple that plays together, stays together. And nothing is more playful and fun than dressing up for a date night.

You could dress your best to simulate a nice date night out, or you could follow the theme night above and have some fun. I’ve always loved cosplay, and I’d love an excuse to throw together a quick costume on my favorite characters.

Try a Stranger Things Night with some totally 80s outfits to match the vibe. Put on your best robe and imitate a Jedi before a Star Wars Night. Swing it back a bit and watch Scooby-Doo and do matching outfits as your favorite characters.

Give yourself permission to have fun with it and do something you wouldn’t normally do.

Netflix Night BINGO Games

I’ve learned from experience that Bingo games are a great way to introduce a new element into something routine. Popular TV Shows become a little more intense when you’re one square away from victory! This is a super-easy way to add a twist to your Netflix night and to a TV show you’ve seen before.

Try BINGO games for popular shows like Friends, New Girl, or The Office. Alternatively, you can try making your own Bingo sheet with your favorite movie references and character quirks.

Choose a prize for the first person to get bingo, and make sure you shout when you win!

Popcorn Basketball Challenge

What goes better with a movie than some freshly popped popcorn? Popcorn is my favorite way to add some flavor to a movie night- and arguably the best way to eat popcorn is by catching in your mouth after tossing it in the air.

Make it a contest with your partner and see who can catch the most pieces in your mouth! The winner gets to choose the movie. This adds so much fun and creates memories during what could just be a regular Netflix night.

Alternatively, you can also aim your popcorn into a cup or basket- but beware: this can get messy.

I think this would also be a great game to play with small candies or chocolates and make-believe you’re out for a date at the cinema.
